Johan and his wife Rebecca were both born in Southern Oregon and are proud members
of the Jackson County Community. They are outdoor enthusiasts who can be found exploring the
best mountains, lakes and trails that Southern Oregon has to offer, most often with their
daughters in tow. Johan is proud to reside in Jackson County and is eager to continue his service
to this community that he holds dear.
As a child, Johan’s family moved to Portland where he ultimately graduated from Grant
High School. Prior to entering law school, Johan’s initial focus was becoming an educator. Johan
has always had a strong desire to better his community and serve the public. As he neared the
completion of his undergraduate degree from Portland State University, Johan shifted his interest
to the law, subsequently enrolling in law school. Johan’s desire was to promote an all-inclusive
justice system with a specific emphasis on the complexities of behavioral health, drug addiction,
and drug-driven crimes.
In law school, Johan earned a certificate in Law and Government and took a particular
interest in legislative interpretation. He volunteered at the De Muniz Pine Street Resource Clinic
in Marion County, where he worked with offenders recently released from incarceration with a
focus on reintegration services to combat recidivism. As Johan’s career advanced, he cultivated
his understanding of the many facets of the justice system as well as alternative treatment courts.
As a Deputy District Attorney, Johan demonstrated a commitment to seeking justice for
the citizens of Jackson County. Through the strong relationships he established with the Courts,
the local bar and community partners, Johan developed a reputation for being fair, transparent
and highly invested in upholding the law. In its simplest form, a prosecutor acts as an
intermediary between private citizens and the criminal justice system, and Johan took pride in his
reputation as being an approachable yet tough prosecutor. Johan also has experience as a civil
litigator in his current position as Senior Assistant County Counsel. In this position, Johan
routinely tackles complex civil issues in both Federal and State Courts. Johan regularly interacts
with several governmental departments, approaching complex legal issues which require in depth
preparation and an astute legal mind.
Johan is highly active in the legal community in Jackson County. He was a long-time
executive committee member and past president of the William V. Deatherage chapter of the
American Inns of Court. He additionally serves on the executive committee for the Litigation
Section of the Oregon State Bar. Johan is also on the steering committee for the Campaign for
Equal Justice in Southern Oregon which is a non-profit founded by lawyers with the mission of
making equal justice a reality for all Oregonians.
